On Friday, MLA Mike Bernier and MP Bob Zimmer announced that the District of Chetwynd has been awarded a federal and provincial Clean Water and Wastewater Fund grant of almost 2 million 6 hundred thousand dollars to upgrade the Water Treatment Plant.

The District’s existing Water Treatment Plant was built in 1996. The Plant has experienced some major maintenance issues in recent years and it was determined that the sand filtration system was no longer working optimally. The federal and provincial governments collaborated to launch the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund in September of 2016.

This fund’s predominant focus is investments that meet immediate priorities for clean water and wastewater, with the district’s water treatment plant improvement fitting squarely in to these criteria.

Fifty percent of the funding will come from the federal government and thirty three percent will come from the provincial government, leaving the district with only 17 percent to cover.
