Fort St John RCMP have arrested a man in relation to a Tuesday incident.

Police were called to the Safeway after an alleged shoplifter reportedly attempted to pull a firearm from his waistband during a struggle with employees.

The employees had apparently attempted to detain the 26 year-old shoplifter and, when he went for the gun, the public jumped in to help restrain the man and take possession of the weapon.

The gun was later identified as an imitation C02 pistol.

Police arrested the man without incident and recommended five charges, including using a firearm in the commission of offense.

He made his first appearance in Provincial court yesterday evening. We will update you as more information becomes available.
