Northern Health is encouraging youth who plan to visit Okanagan within the next few months to get vaccinated for meningitis after an outbreak of the disease occurred there last week. Northern Health Spokesperson Eryn Collins says Northern Health, as well as many other health authorities in the province are implementing recommendations made by the BC Centre for Disease Control to make the vaccine available to youth who may be at risk of contracting the disease. The recommendation applies to any youth who plans to visit for a period of three weeks or longer within the next few months. The outbreak was declared last week by Okanagan officials after 11 cases were detected.
